Cruz Named Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive

Penelope Cruz has beat out a world of competition to earn a special honor.

The 40-year-old Spanish actress and Oscar winner has been given the title of Esquire‘s Sexiest Woman Alive.

Penelope Cruz - Esquire

Cruz, who stars in the upcoming Spanish-language film Ma Ma and Grimsby with Sacha Baron Cohen is the 10th honoree and the first Latina ever to earn the annual title.

“I’ve played a lot of tricks on myself,” she says in the magazine’s cover story. “I’ve made it hard for me sometimes, especially in my teens and 20s. I had an attraction to drama. Most of us have that, especially if you are an artist — you feel like you are tempted to explore the darkness. I could not be less interested now. For me, the most attractive, charming, cool, fun, interesting thing — how could I call it? A plan.”

Previous recipients of the magazine’s Sexiest Woman Alive title include Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, Rihanna, Minka Kelly, Kate Beckinsale, Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Jessica Biel and Angelina Jolie.

Rapace to Star in Sci-Fi Drama “What Happened To Monday?”

It’s just another manic Monday for Noomi Rapace

The 33-year-old half-Spanish actress is teaming up with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters director Tommy Wirkola for What Happened To Monday?

Noomi Rapace

Rapace will portray septuplet sisters who struggle to stay hidden in an overpopulated world where a one-child policy outlaws siblings in the sci-fi drama.

Wirkola said he originally envisioned the protagonist(s) as male, but “I was struck by the complexities of having an actor portray seven characters and immediately knew Noomi was the ideal actor – male or female – to bring them to life,” said Wirkola in a statement.

That puts the breakout star of the original The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in the rare company of female talent like Angelina Jolie, who succeeded Tom Cruise as the star of Salt.

The script for What Happened To Monday? was written by Max Botkin.

Rapace, who signed with Creative Artists Agency this past August, will next star in Child 44 and Animal Rescue.

Cameron Diaz: One of the “ExpendaBelles”?

Cameron Diaz could soon prove she’s one tough belle…

The 41-year-old half-Cuban American actress is one of the high-profile actresses being courted for The ExpendaBelles, the all-female version of Sylvester Stallone‘s The Expendables franchise.

In addition to the former Charlie’s Angels star, Millennium Films‘ chief Avi Lerner tells Bulgaria’s press Standart that he’s also courting Meryl Streep and Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich for the project.

The action film is expected to begin shooting in Bulgaria in the near future, once Lerner secures a female director to helm the project.

The script is written by Legally Blonde scribes Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith.

When the film was first announced last year, The Expendables 2 director Simon West offered his thoughts on his favorite actresses to join cast, “It would be Angelina Jolie, Diaz, Jovovich, the list goes on. Helen Mirren, Jamie Lee Curtis would be great.”

Envisioning the female gang as “seven or eight women mercenaries,” he said they would not be a direct replacement of Sly and co. in the franchise.

“No, it would be running parallel,” he said. “They would meet up and then they would fight and they would join up and save each other.”

Vergara to be Immortalized in Wax at Madame Tussauds

It’s true… Sofia Vergara has one heckuva (wax) figure…

The 40-year-old Colombian actress will be immortalized with lifelike wax figures at New York City’s Madame Tussauds wax museums in New York and Las Vegas beginning June 4.

Sofia Vergara

“We are very excited about Sofia Vergara’s arrival at Madame Tussauds. She has become one of the most recognized and popular talents in the world and we know her fans and our visitors will love her figures,” said museum representative Janine DiGioacchino in a statement.

The three-time SAG Award-winning Modern Family star was an “enthusiastic participant” in the figure creation process, which took four months.

The museum’s artists had to take thousands of photos and measurements of Vergara to get her image just right.

In New York, the wax figure of Vergara will show off her curvas with the same Marchesa dress that she wore last year to New York City’s Met Gala.

For her Las Vegas waxwork, Vergara gave the museum the form-fitting black dress accented with leopard-print sleeves originally worn to promote the third season of Modern Family.

Vergara joins the list of celebrities who in recent years have seen their immortalized in wax, including Penelope Cruz, Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga.

Cruz In Negotiations to Star in “Gucci”

She’s donned Gucci on the red carpet, but Penelope Cruz may soon be appearing on the big screen in a film about the Italian family behind the legendary clothing brand.

The 38-year-old Spanish actress and 2013’s Campari calender girl is currently in talks to star in Gucci, according to The Wrap.

Penelope Cruz

Directed by Ridley Scott’s daughter Jordan Scott, the film tells the story of the late Maurizio Gucci, grandson of Gucci’s founder, as he becomes heir to the family empire.

Gucci was shot to death in 1995. His ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, was jailed for the killing in 1999.

The project, first announced in 2006, originally had Ridley Scott attached to direct from a script by Andrea Berloff. Several other writers have since been involved in the project.

Angelina Jolie was approached in 2009 to play Reggiani, who was jailed for 29 years for allegedly ordering the killing of her ex-husband, when Ridley was still attached to direct.

Reports of the film’s resurfacing came as Gucci makes a push to re-establish the brand as synonymous with Hollywood glamour, which it has been struggling to do since Tom Ford left the house in 2004.

The company has become increasingly involved in the film world. Gucci has given more than $2 million to Martin Scorsese to help him restore old films, including Federico Fellini‘s La Dolce Vita and Sergio Leone‘s Once Upon a Time in America.

The label also funds film scholarships and supports a weekly film series at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Bardem In Talks to Star in “The Counselor”

Javier Bardem could be spending time with the counselor this summer…

The 43-year-old Oscar-winning Spanish actor—who will be playing the villain in the highly anticipated James Bond movie, Skyfall—is in talks to join the cast of The Counselor, a film about a lawyer played by Michael Fassbender who gets in way too deep after flirting with the illegal drug trade.

Rumors are swirling that the thriller, to be directed by Ridley Scott, could also star Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Production on The Counselor is expected to start production in late June.

Almodóvar’s Next Muse: Angelina Jolie?

He’s called Penélope Cruz his muse and directed her in four of his films…. But Pedro Almodóvar could soon be working with another of Hollywood’s A-list celebrities.

While appearing on the red carpet at American Cinematheque‘s annual event for the Golden Globes‘ foreign-language nominees, the 62-year-old Spanish director—whose latest film, The Skin I Live In, recently received 16 Goya Awards nominations—ran into fellow nominee Angelina Jolie and playfully struck a deal to work together.

This year’s entries include Jolie’s In the Land of Blood and Honey, about family strife and abuse of women in Bosnia, and Almodovar’s psycho-thriller The Skin I Live In.

After speaking separately to reporters on the red carpet at the Los Angeles event, Almodóvar and Jolie took a break from interviews to greet each other and talk shop.

Almodóvar joked about improving his English and then eagerly agreed when Jolie expressed an interest in working with him.

“So you promise, one day? When all these cameras are gone, we’ll find a film together?” Jolie asked Almodóvar, to which he responded, “Yes. Absolutely. This is a commitment in front of the cameras.”

“I love her,” Almodóvar said later, adding that he was working on a project set in New York that could be filmed in the United States in English if “the right script” can be found.
