The 64-year-old Oscar-nominated actress will star opposite Trace Lysette, Patricia Clarkson and Anna Paquin in the feature film Monica, from Italian filmmaker Andrea Pallaoro.
The drama will chart the story of a transgender woman (Lysette) who returns home to the Midwest to care for her dying mother (Clarkson).
The tale of a fractured family is said to explore themes of abandonment, ageing, acceptance and redemption.
From an original screenplay by the director and Orlando Tirado, the film is scheduled to begin production at the end of the year.
Barraza earned an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Babel. She most recently appeared in Rambo: Last Blood, and starred in the seriesPenny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Showtime has released the series premiere of its new drama Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, starring the 28-year-old Costa Rican actor, early for free online sampling ahead of its April 26 on-air debut. It’s available now on YouTube and SHO.com.
Zovatto stars alongside Nathan Lane, Natalie Dormer, Kerry Bishé, Rory Kinnear, Adriana Barraza, Michael Gladis, Jessica Garza and Johnathan Nievesin the follow-up to Penny Dreadfulfrom the original series’ creator, writer and executive producer John Logan.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. Showtime is also supporting the Farmworkers Covid-19 Pandemic Relief Fundto help raise funds for farmworkers and their families, similar to the Vega family depicted in the series.

The 63-year-old Mexican actress, an Oscar and Golden Globe nominee for her role in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel, has been cast in a lead role opposite Daniel Zovatto and Natalie Dormer in Showtime’s upcoming series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Barraza will play Maria Vega, the powerful matriarch of the Vega family. Maria will go to any lengths to protect her children from the dangerous world of 1938 social politics, as well as from the chilling supernatural forces invading their lives.
In addition to Zovatto and Dormer, the series also stars Jessica Garza, Johnathan Nievesand Nathan Lane.
Logan is the series’ creator, writer and executive producer. Paco Cabezasis set to direct multiple episodes.
Production on the drama series is expected to begin later this year.

The 51-year-old Puerto Rican actor and Oscar winner will voice the villainous fox Swiper in Paramount Pictures’ Dora the Explorerfilm.
The film has finished shooting in Australia, but del Toro will provide the voice-over to the fox who always tries to undermine the young explorer.
On the animated series, Dora is known to wave Swiper away from his thieving activities by getting the television audience at home to scream “Swiper no swiping.”
The movie follows a high school-bound Dora leading her friends and her sidekick Boots the monkey on a Goonies-type adventure to save her parents and solve the mystery behind a lostIncacivilization.
Isabela Moner from Instant Family stars alongside Michael Pena and Eva Longoria as her parents, as well as Eugenio Derbez, Adriana Barraza, Q’orianka Kilcher and Temuera Morrison.

James Bobin directs the feature live-action take of the classic Nickelodeon cartoon series.
The 43-year-old Mexican American actress and former Desperate Housewives star has been cast in Paramount Players’ live-action feature of Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer.
Longoria is set to portray Elena, Dora’s mother.
The James Bobin-directed movie hits theaters on August 2, 2019 and is already in production over in Australia with castmembers Isabela Moner (as Dora), Eugenio Derbez, Micke Moreno, Nicholas Coombe, Madeleine Madden, Adriana Barraza, and Temuera Morrison.
In the movie, the young explorer takes on high school, and with her new pack of friends as well as her sidekick the monkey Boots and her cousin Diego, leads them on a Goonies-esque quest to save her parents and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost Inca civilization.
Longoria recently starred in LD Entertainment’s Dog Daysand Pantelion/MGM’s Overboard.
Longoria, via her production company UnbeliEVAble Entertainment, is executive producing the ABC drama series Grand Hotel scheduled for a midseason release as well as the recently announced series Ambassadorwhich received a big put pilot commitment from ABC. Adriana Barraza’s heading south for the upcoming television season…
The 58-year-old Mexican actress, an Oscar nominee for her performance inBabel, has landed a starring role in USA Network’s drama pilot Queen Of The South.
Queen Of The South centers on Teresa Mendoza (portrayed by Alice Braga), who’s forced to go on the run when her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico.
Barraza will play Camilla, the lioness ex-wife of a powerful drug lord who is establishing her own empire in America.
She quickly becomes a mother figure to Teresa (Braga), but their relationship escalates into a battle of wills that will leave more than a few bodies in its wake.
Barraza most recently appeared in Guillermo del Toro’s FX series The Strain and the feature Cake. Her 0ther film credits include Amores Perros, Thor, Drag Me To Hell and The 33.
The 57-year-old Mexican actress, who earned an Oscar nomination for her heart-wrenching role as Mexican nanny Amelia in the Brad Pitt-starrer Babel, will co-star opposite George Lopez in Saint George, FX’s upcoming 10-90 sitcom from Lionsgate TV and Debmar-Mercury.
Created and co-written by Matt Williams, David McFadzean and Lopez, Saint George revolves around the chaotic life of a recently divorced working class Mexican-American turned successful entrepreneur (portrayed Lopez), who struggles to balance his demanding ex-wife, his 11-year-old son, his overbearing mother (Barraza) who just moved in, and his uncle. If that isn’t enough, he also has to deal with his new role teaching history once a week at a night school.
Barraza, also recently booked a recurring arc on Guillermo Del Toro’s FX drama The Strain, starring Mia Maestro.
In her native Mexico, Barraza is best known for her role in Amores Perros. Her other credits include Henry Poole Is Here, Drag Me to Hell, Spanglish, From Prada to Nada and Thor.
