Nicky Jam Receives Four iHeartRadio Music Award Nominations

Nicky Jam is getting some much deserved radio recognition…

The 35-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American singer-songwriter received four iHeartRadio Music Award nominations, including one in a non-Latin category.

Nicky Jam, the most-nominated Latino artist, is up for Latin Artist of the Year, where he’ll face off against Enrique Iglesias, J Balvin, Prince Royce and Yandel.

The Latin Grammy winner also received two nominations in the Latin Song of the Year category for his recent collaborations: Mana’s remake of “De Pies A Cabeza” and Reik’s “Ya Me Enteré.”

But Nicky Jam’s biggest nod comes in the Best Music Video category for his popular “Hasta El Amanecer” clip. He’s up against the likes of Justin Timberlake, The Chainsmokers, Beyonce, Coldplay, ZAYN, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna.

Meanwhile, Selena Gomez is the most-nominated Latina artist with two nods. She’s up for Female Artist of the Year and Best Fan Army for her avid followers, the Selenators.

Fifth Harmony, featuring Latina singers Ally Brooke Hernandez, Lauren Jauregui and Camila Cabello, who recently left the group, earned three nods.

Bruno Mars was revealed as the event’s first announced performer. The part-Puerto Rican singer is also is nominated in the socially voted covers category for his rendition of Adele‘s “All I Ask.”

Other Latino nominees include Demi Lovato, Gerardo Ortiz, Sofia Reyes and CNCO.

The awards are intended to celebrate the music heard across iHeartMedia radio stations over the past year.

Voting for the fan army award began Tuesday through iHeartRadio’s social media accounts and its app, with all other categories now open, and runs through February 24, with the fan army award extending to the night of the event on March 5. Fans can vote by visiting iHeartRadio.com/awards.

The 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards will air live from the Forum in Inglewood, California on March 5 at 8:00 pm EST on TBS, TNT and truTV.

The Associated Press Names Miranda Its Entertainer of the Year

Lin-Manuel Miranda isn’t just the man of the hour… He’s the man of the last 8,000-plus hours.

The 36-year-old Puerto Rican actor, playwright, composer, rapper, and writer, bested Beyonce, Adele and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, among others, to earn the honor of The Associated Press Entertainer of the Year, voted by members of the news cooperative and AP entertainment reporters.

Best known for creating and starring in the Broadway musicals Hamilton and In the Heights. Miranda has had a banner year, winning a Pulitzer Prize and a pair of Tony Awards.

The Hamilton writer-composer also earned a Golden Globe nomination, won the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, wrote music for a top movie, and inspired a best-selling book, a best-selling album of Hamilton covers and a popular PBS documentary.

“There’s been more than a little good luck in the year itself and the way it’s unfolded,” Miranda said after being told of the honor. “I continue to try to work on the things I’ve always wanted to work on and try to say yes to the opportunities that I’d kick myself forever if I didn’t jump at them.”

Miranda joins the list of previous AP Entertainer of the Year winners who in recent years have included Adele, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga, Tina Fey and Betty White.

The animated Disney juggernaut Frozen captured the prize in 2014, and Star Wars won last year. (Miranda wrote one of the songs in The Force Awakens.)

When he hosted Saturday Night Live in October, he somewhat tongue-in-cheek acknowledged the rarity of having a theater composer as host, saying: “Most of you watching at home have no idea who I am.”

But that has definitely changed… Miranda was virtually everywhere in popular culture this year — stage, film, TV, music and politics — engaging on social media as he went. Like a lyric he wrote for Alexander Hamilton, it seemed at times that the non-stop Miranda was working as if he was “running out of time.”

Julio D. Diaz, of the Pensacola News Journal, said Miranda “made the whole world sing, dance and think. Coupled with using his prestige to become involved in important sociopolitical issues, there was no greater or more important presence in entertainment in 2016.”

Among the things Miranda did this year are asking the U.S. Congress to help dig Puerto Rico out of its debt crisis, getting an honorary doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, performing at a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton on Broadway, lobbying to stop gun violence in America, and teaming up with Jennifer Lopez on the benefit single “Love Make the World Go Round.”

He and his musical Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards in June, but perhaps his deepest contribution that night was tearfully honoring those killed hours before at an Orlando nightclub with a beautiful sonnet: “Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside,” he said. “Now fill the world with music, love and pride.”

He started the year onstage in the Broadway hit Hamilton (which in 2015 had won a Grammy and earned Miranda a MacArthur genius grant) and ended it with a Golden Globe nomination for writing the song “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, which was on top of the box office for three weeks this month, earning $165 million.

“I’ve been jumping from thing to thing and what’s been thrilling is to see the projects that happen very quickly kind of exploding side-by-side with the projects I’ve been working on for years,” Miranda said.

Though theater fans have long cherished his fluency in both Stephen Sondheim and Tupac, Hamilton helped Miranda break into the mainstream in 2016. The groundbreaking, biographical hip-hop show tells the true story of an orphan immigrant from the Caribbean who rises to the highest ranks of American society, performed by a young African-American and Latino cast.

The cast went to the White House in March to perform songs from the show for the first family and to answer questions from school children. A version of the show opened in Chicago in October and a production is slated to land in California next year and in London soon.

Erin O’Neill of The Marietta Times said Miranda dominated entertainment news this year but, more importantly, “opened a dialogue about government, the founding of our country and the future of politics in America.”

There’s more Miranda to come in 2017, including filming Disney‘s Mary Poppins Returns with Emily Blunt (due out Christmas 2018) and an ambitious TV and film adaptation of the fantasy trilogy The Kingkiller Chronicle.

“I’m back in a planting mode after a harvest,” Miranda said, laughing.

Late Late Show host James Corden pulled out all the stops for his latest installment of Carpool Karaoke, a rousing rendition of the half-Venezuelan American singer’s holiday classic “All I Want For Christmas,” kicked off by the diva herself.

It all starts with Carey and Corden belting out the insta-classic holiday single as they drive around town. Then, several past A-list Carpool Karaoke guests chime in in through video cuts, including Lady Gaga, Adele, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas, Elton John, Selena Gomez, Chris Martin, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Gwen Stefani.

It’s Carey’s second appearance on Corden’s popular “Carpool Karaoke” segment.

Gomez Scores Her First Career Win at the American Music Awards

It’s a special first for Selena Gomez…

The 24-year-old Mexican American singer picked up her first-ever awards at Sunday night’s American Music Awards.

Gomez, who had taken an extended break from the scene, returned to the spotlight just in time to beat out Adele and Rihanna in the Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock category.

But Gomez wasn’t the only Hispanic artist to leave the AMAs a winner…

Ally Brooke Hernandez, Lauren Jauregui and Camila Cabello and their fellow Fifth Harmony members also picked up their first AMA trophy on Sunday.

The all-girl group won the Collaboration of The Year prize for their single “Work From Home,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign.

Meanwhile, Enrique Iglesias picked up his third consecutive win in the Favorite Artist – Latin category.

With eight career wins, the 41-year-old Spanish singer-songwriter is the most awarded artist in the “Favorite Latin Artist” category.

Mars to Release New Single “24K Magic” This Friday

Bruno Mars is ready to share a little music Magic…

The 30-year-old part-Puerto Rican actor has announced plans to release the new single “24K Magic” on October 7.

“Excited to announce 24K Magic, out this Friday!!” he said on Instagram. “You can call it my first single, but I call it the invitation to the party.”

“24K Magic” will be the first track from his forthcoming third studio album, the follow-up to 2012’s Unorthodox Jukebox, which yielded the hits “Locked Out of Heaven,” “When I Was Your Man” and “Treasure.”

Since that album’s release, Mars has collaborated on Mark Ronson‘s 2014 hit “Uptown Funk,” written “All I Ask” with Adele, performed at two Super Bowls and debuted the ballad “Rest of My Life” on the season-two finale of The CW‘s Jane the Virgin.

Skrillex has mentioned that he’s an upcoming collaborator on new material.

No album release date or title has been revealed.

But Mars reassured his fans on Twitter, “You think I’ve been playin this whole time? You don’t think I’m masterminding the return?”

During her Future Now Tour stop in Cleveland on Friday night, the 24-year-old part-Mexican American singer tackled one of Adele’s recent hits.

Hernandez to Serve as a Presenter at the MTV Video Music Awards

Laurie Hernandez is ready to make music… or at least a music-related announcement.

The 16-year-old Puerto Rican gymnast, a member of the gold-winning Final Five and a silver medalist on the balance beam at the 2016 Rio Games, is heading to the MTV Video Music Awards.

Hernandez and her teammates, Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian, will present awards at Sunday’s show in New York City.

Jimmy Fallon, Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys and Puff Daddy will also present awards, while attendees at Madison Square Garden will include Kanye West, Bryson Tiller, 2 Chainz, DNCE, Desiigner and Troye Sivan.

Britney Spears, Rihanna, Future, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Nick Jonas and the Chainsmokers will perform during the live show.

Beyonce is the leading nominee with 11, followed by Adele with eight nominations.

Beyonce, Adele, West, Justin Bieber and Drake will compete for video of the year.

Lopez Shines in Her “Carpool Karaoke” Segment with the Late Late Show’s James Corden

The 46-year-old Puerto Rican singer, actress and American Idol judge helped Late Late Show host James Corden celebrate one year on the air with a memorable appearance on his Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special.

Corden’s first order of business with la Lopez was to settle on nicknames. “You’re J.Lo, I could be J. Co,” he suggested.

“I think we should make a rap group together!” Lopez said, adding that they could open for her in Las Vegas.

“Yeah, but I worry about you having to follow it,” said Corden. “I worry the audience are like, ‘Aw that’s a shame that he’s gone.'”

Sitting shotgun, Lopez taught Corden her “music video look” and showed off some impressive contacts in her phone (Leonardo DiCaprio, Demi Lovato, Bradley Cooper and Iggy Azalea among them), or “the best phone I’ve ever seen in my life.” Corden even texted DiCaprio as her, inconspicuously signing it “J.Lo, you know, from the block.”

They also sang “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” and “Booty“, then J.Lo. beat on Corden while singing her Spanish-language hit “Que Hiciste,” as well as discussed the possibility of insuring parts of Lopez’s body.

Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment has become a viral hit in late night, with celebrity appearances including Adele, Justin Bieber, Elton John and One Direction bringing more than 800 million views to the Late Late Show’s YouTube account. Late Late Show producers are already exploring a spinoff series based on the segment.

The 46-year-old Puerto Rican singer, actress and American Idol judge will appear on James Corden‘s Carpool Karaoke primetime special.

In the sneak peak trailer released on Monday, the Late Late Show host features Lopez, who will be one of his guests in the hour-long episode.

“So tonight, I’m on my way before 12:30, cleaning up my language ’cause I can’t talk dirty. I’ll make your TV shine brighter than a halo, all leading up to a carpool with J.Lo,” sings Corden to the tune of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ “Downtown.”

Corden has featured artists like Justin Bieber, Adele, Sia and One Direction in his “Carpool Karaoke” sessions, and now it’s J.Lo’s turn to sing to her own lyrics while driving down the streets of Los Angeles with the British TV personality.

The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special is set to air Tuesday, March 29 at 10:00 pm ET on CBS.

Rodriguez enters the Latin Pop Digital Songs chart at No. 4 (2,000 downloads). A video posted on Rodriquez’s YouTube channel has garnered more than 3.6 million views since being uploaded on December 1, also supporting a No. 3 debut on the Billboard + Twitter Emerging Artists chart.

“I just connected with the song and really had the urge of writing and singing it in Spanish,” Rodriguez told Billboard. “I never expected my Spanglish version to go viral!”

When asked about how she adapted the English song to Spanish she reveals, “It was my own interpretation and I chose to write it in a way that made sense to me but still kept the essence of the original.”

While Rodriguez enjoys her first solo chart arrival, she is no stranger to the Latin charts — as a songwriter. She was a co-writer on Romeo Santos’ 2014 smash hit “Odio,” featuring Drake — a 13-week chart leader on the Hot Latin Songs chart.
