Gomez’s “Hotel Transylvania 2” Sets New September Box Office Record with $47.5 Million

Selena Gomez has nearly 48 million reasons to celebrate…

Hotel Transylvania 2, which features the 23-year-old as part of the returning voice cast, easily topped the weekend box office, earning an impressive $47.5 million.

Selena Gomez Hotel Transylvania 2

Hotel Transylvania 2 takes place seven years after the first film, with the hotel now open to human guests. Mavis (Gomez) and Johnny have a young son named Dennis, whose lack of any vampire abilities worries his grandfather Dracula. When Mavis and Johnny go on a visit to Johnny’s parents, Dracula calls his friends to help him make Dennis a vampire. However, an unexpected visit from Dracula’s old-school human-hating father, Vlad soon turns things upside-down.

Hotel Transylvania 2 also sets a new September record, beating the original “Hotel Transylvania” film’s $42.5 million launch in 2012.

It’s also Gomez’s best opening at the box office, beating out the $45,012,998 earned by Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! in its opening weekend back in March 2008.

The $80 million production got off to a brisk start overseas, outpacing the first film’s results in parts of Latin America.

“It’s on its way to being one of the most beloved franchises of all time,” said Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures president of worldwide distribution.

“There are a lot of stories left to tell,” he added, saying he hoped there would be a third installment. “Adam Sandler and the filmmakers have created an unforgettable animated world that plays to audiences everywhere.”

First Trailer Released for Gomez’s “Hotel Transylvania 2”

Selena Gomez is sinking her teeth into motherhood…

Sony Pictures Animation has released the first trailer for the 22-year-old half-Mexican American actress/singer’s Hotel Transylvania 2, the ghoulish sequel to the 2012 animated film.

Selena Gomez

Much has changed since the first film. Hotel Transylvania now allows human guests as well as beasties, and there’s a new little monster toddling around — but is he really a vampire?

Drac (Adam Sandler) is the proud new grandpa of the surprisingly redheaded boy of Mavis and Johnny (Gomez, Andy Samberg). When they threaten to move from Transylvania to California, the fang gang goes to work on stopping such nonsense.

Mel Brooks joins the cast as Vlad, Drac’s old-school father who is none too pleased about the goings-on. Also back for another killing are voice stars including Steve Buscemi, David Spade, Kevin James, Fran Drescher and Molly Shannon.

Hotel Transylvania 2 opens in theaters on September 25.

Rudd will star in the indie drama as Ben, a caregiver looking after a frustrated teenager named Trevor who is in the advanced stages of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Gomez will portray Dot, a sassy young woman who hitches a ride with the pair during a road trip, and whose forwardness and lack of embarrassment about Trevor’s condition causes him to develop a crush on her.

Burnett, the veteran exec producer of The Late Show with David Letterman, adapted the script from Jonathan Evison’s 2013 novel of the same name.

Soon-to-be co-stars Gomez and Rudd were snapped Sunday night after the Golden Globes with writer/actor Justin Theroux, when a photo of the trio posted to Gomez’s Instagram garnered 1.1 million likes.

Filming on The Revised Fundamentals Of Caregiving begins January 22 in Atlanta.

It’s the latest indie film for Gomez, whose big screen credits include Sony’s 2012 animation hit Hotel Transylvania. A role in Harmony Korine’s racy Spring Breakers added street cred to her resume, and she was most recently seen in William H. Macy’s directorial debut Rudderless, which premiered last year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Gomez next reprises her voice role in Sony’s animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 2 opposite Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg. Offscreen, the global star who has over 107 million social media followers recently signed with Interscope Records after a long run with Disney’s Hollywood Records.

Thorne Releases Debut Single “Call It Whatever”

Bella Thorne is ready to drop it like it’s pop

16-year-old half-Cuban American actress and former Disney Channel recently unveiled her debut single, “Call It Whatever.”

Bella Thorne

The former Shake It Up star’s bubblegum track has earned more than 153,000 views on YouTube since its May 13 release, and previews a debut album that Thorne says won’t follow in the path of the network’s other former stars like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.

“I don’t think about anything close to that,” Thorne tells Billboard when asked about the inevitable comparisons. “I don’t think, ‘Well, Miley went this way, and Selena went that way, so I have to go in the middle.’ That’s not it. I’m just being me. My song is called ‘Call It Whatever.’ You can call me whatever, if you like me or not like me. I really don’t care.”

The release of “Call It Whatever” — which was produced by Paro and co-written by Par Westerland, Rickard Goransson and Skyler Stonestreet — comes roughly a year and a half after Thorne signed to Hollywood Records, the home of Gomez as well as young female stars like Lucy Hale and Demi Lovato.

When the deal was finalized, Thorne was already starring on the network’s hit sitcom Shake It Up along with Zendaya. Thorne released the song “TTYLXOX” on the Shake It Up: Live 2 Dance soundtrack in 2012, but for the Florida native, a full-fledged pop career was always going to take a bit longer to kick-start.

“I really wanted to work on my voice,” says Thorne. “I never sang before, and I didn’t want to put an album out that I wasn’t proud of, or that was Auto-tuned or anything like that. I waited so that I could take a lot of vocal classes, so that I could work on my voice every day.”

The music video for “Call It Whatever” will premiere on May 29, and was filmed in Los Angeles — at the same location, Thorne points out, that Kelis filmed her “Milkshake” video. Thorne’s debut album is due out later in the summer, and won’t necessarily feature the kid-friendly vibe of its lead single.

“‘Call It Whatever’ is my youngest-sounding song,” she says. “This song is definitely for my younger audience. I don’t want to eliminate them, but my album is geared a little bit older. I have some more indie type of songs, some hip-hop, some with an 80s feel, and I have dance music on there.”

While Thorne hopes to tour extensively behind her first album, she has a handful of other projects to promote: she co-stars in the new Adam Sandler comedy Blended and the upcoming film adaptation of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, among several other film projects. Her first book, Autumn Falls, is due out in November, and is featured in a Neutrogena beauty campaign.

“I want to try everything,” says Thorne. “And I want to be great at everything, if it’s the last thing I do.”
