The network saved the series from cancellation by taking it over from ABC for its current fourth season.

Cougar Town’s fifth season, which will air in 2014, will feature 13 episodes.

The ABC Studios-produced series, which airs Tuesdays at 10:00 pm, will have its season four finale on April 9.

Cougar Town has been everything we hoped it would be: a smart, big-hearted, laugh-out-loud comedy that shines a bright light on the TBS brand,” said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies.

Along with Gomez, who portrays the lovable Andy on Cougar Town, the series stars Courteney Cox, Christa Miller, Busy Philipps, Dan Byrd, Josh Hopkins and Brian Van Holt.

Cox and David Arquette also serve as executive producers on the show.

Leguizamo’s Semi-Autobiographical Sitcom Gets ABC Pilot Order

John Leguizamo is one step closer to returning to television…

The 48-year-old Colombian-American actor/comedian has just received his third comedy pilot order from in the last 12 months.

John Leguizamo

The still-untitled multi-camera comedy is based on Leguizamo’s life as a husband, father and fish out of water on the upper West Side of New York as reflected in his one-man shows. Woven into this world are his privileged wife, his friends from his life back in the Bronx, his mother and grandfather who try to keep him grounded in his Latin roots, and his own kids who he worries are getting a little too spoiled and are losing touch with reality.

Leguizamo co-wrote the script for the pilot with former Family Guy executive producer/co-showrunner Chris Sheridan.

The project has been in the works since early February of last year, when Leguizamo signed a development deal with ABC and ABC Studios to develop a comedy inspired by his life for him to star in and executive produce.

But only a week later, Leguizamo was cast in the ABC/ABC Studios pilot The Kings of Van Nuys (then called Only Fools and Horses). After passing on the Kings of Van Nuys pilot in May, ABC brass ordered a new, reworked version of the adaptation of the UK series Only For Fools and Horses. The network then passed on the second pilot in early December, clearing the way for Leguizamo’s original project.

ABC has lined up another half-hour project starring the 48-year-old Colombian American actor and comedian only days after passing on his King of Van Nuys comedy pilot for a second time.

John Leguizamo

Leguizamo’s new project would be based on his life as a husband, father and fish out of water on New York City’s upper West Side.

Intertwined  into this world will be his privileged wife, his friends from his life back in the Bronx, his mother and grandfather who try to keep him grounded in his Latin roots, and his own kids who he worries are getting spoiled and losing touch with reality.

Leguizamo will co-write the story for the untitled single-camera comedy with former Family Guy executive producer Chris Sheridan., who will write the teleplay and executive produce the project with Leguizamo.

The project has been in the works since early February when Leguizamo signed a development deal with ABC and ABC Studios with the intent of developing a single-camera comedy inspired by his professional, personal and family life in New York City.

Rivera Feared Dead in Mexico Plane Crash

The wreckage of the small plane believed to be carrying Banda and ranchera diva Jenni Rivera has been found in northern Mexico with no apparent survivors, according to authorities.

Transportation and Communications Minister Gerardo Ruiz Esparza said that “everything points toward” it being the U.S.-registered Learjet 25 carrying the 43-year-old Mexican-American singer and six other people from Monterrey en route to Toluca, Mexico.

Jenni Rivera

The plane had gone missing after takeoff early Sunday. The plane left Monterrey at about 3:30 am after Rivera performed a concert there and aviation authorities lost contact with the craft about 10 minutes later. It had been scheduled to arrive outside Mexico City, in Toluca, about an hour later.

“There is nothing recognizable, neither material nor human” in the wreckage,” Ruiz Esparza told Televisa.

Authorities had not confirmed that Rivera was among the dead.

Jorge Domene, spokesman for Nuevo Leon’s government, said also aboard the plane were her publicist, lawyer, makeup artist and the flight crew.

Rivera, born and raised in Long Beach, California, is one of the biggest stars of grupero music, which is influenced by the norteno, cumbia and ranchera styles.

Know as la “Diva de la Banda,” Rivera was beloved by fans on both sides of the border for such songs as “De contrabando and “La Gran Señora.”

She recently won two Billboard Mexican Music Awards: Female Artist of the Year and Banda Album of the Year for Joyas prestadas: Banda.

The successful singer, businesswoman and actress appeared in the indie film Filly Brown, as the title character’s incarcerated mother, and was the star of the mun2 reality show I Love Jenni. And ABC Studios had just announced plans this week to put in development Jenni, a multi-camera family comedy starring Rivera.

Rivera had given a concert before thousands of fans in Monterrey on Saturday night. After the concert she gave a press conference during which she spoke of her emotional state following her recent divorce from former Major League Baseball pitcher Esteban Loaiza, who played for teams including the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I can’t get caught up in the negative because that destroys you. Perhaps trying to move away from my problems and focus on the positive is the best I can do. I am a woman like any other and ugly things happen to me like any other woman,” Rivera said Saturday night. “The number of times I have fallen down is the number of times I have gotten up.”

The mother of five children and grandmother of two had announced in October that she was divorcing Loaiza after two years of marriage. It was her third marriage. Rivera is the sister of Mexican singer Lupillo Rivera.

Hayek & Horta Developing “Bastards” for ABC Studios…

Salma Hayek is reuniting with her Ugly Betty cohort Silvio Horta to develop a Latino-themed dramedy for primetime television.

ABC and ABC Studios have put in development Bastards, from the 46-year-old Mexican actress and producer, who served as Ugly Betty’s executive producer and Betty creator Horta, according to Deadline.com.

Salma Hayek

Bastards, written by Horta, centers on a lively Cuban-American family who has its lives turned upside down when it’s revealed that the family patriarch had a child with the family maid more than 25 years ago. Now his wife will do anything to protect her children’s inheritance and prevent her family’s deepest and darkest secrets from ever being revealed.

Bastards originated from an idea by Hayek. She and Jose Tamez, her producing partner at their ABC Studios-based Ventanarosa, had been trying to tackle the premise for awhile.

Horta, who is of Cuban- American descent, recently received a call from Tamez and a Mark Gordon Prods executive who was once Horta’s ABC executive on Ugly Betty.

“I immediately sparked to the concept — it was fun and juicy and had the opportunity for both a lot of salacious situations and humor as well as a lot of heart and emotions, hitting that sweet spot I like to write,” said Horta.

After some quick deal-making, the team sold the project to ABC. Back in 2005, others had taken a stab at adapting the popular telenovela Ugly Betty for American audiences before Horta, but his version stuck. “I hope history will repeat itself,” he quipped.

Last season, Horta wrote and executive produced another dramedy about a Latino family for Fox. The project, based on an idea by Fox entertainment topper Kevin Reilly and executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, centered on three sisters and their interlinked lives. While it didn’t get to pilot, Fox kept the project alive and put it in redevelopment. The process kept Horta, who is under an overall deal at Sony Television, busy, so he missed the broadcast selling season and was preparing cable pitches when he got the call on Bastards. He’s now focusing on the script, which is due in a month.

In addition to Bastards, Ventanarosa has The Cisco Kid, a re-imagining of the iconic Latino character, for CBS.

Rivera Headlining ABC’s “Jenni” Comedy Project…

She’s already a mega superstar on mun2… And now Jenni Rivera’s ready to shine on ABC.

The network has put in development Jenni, a multi-camera family comedy starring the 43-year-old Mexican-American singersongwriter.

Jenni Rivera

The project hails from leading Broadway producer Robert L. Boyett – marking his return to television, where he was one of the top comedy series producers in the 1980s and 1990s — and Designing Women’s Robert Horn.

Boyett and Horn will write the project, which stars Rivera as a strong, middle-class, single Latina working to raise a family using unique parenting skills, while struggling to run a family business and navigate her extended, co-dependent relatives — all while fighting the cultural perception that she needs a man to do it.

Boyett and Horn will executive produce, with Rivera and her manager Pete Salgado serving as producers for ABC Studios.

Rivera has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide. She’s also the star mun2′s docu-reality series I Love Jenni, now filming its third season.

In addition, Rivera made her big screen acting debut in the critically acclaimed Filly Brown.

Leguizamo’s “Kings of Van Nuys” Gets a Second Chance at ABC

John Leguizamo is getting a second chance at a network television series…

ABC has given a formal green light to a new pilot for Kings of Van Nuys, starring the 48-year-old Colombian American actor.

John Leguizamo

The network first ordered a pilot for the multi-camera project, which is based on the British series Only Fools And Horses, last season. It missed the cut but ABC chief Paul Lee, a huge fan of the original, liked it enough to request a retooling of the pilot. Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley, who penned the original pilot, wrote a new version. And as part of ABC’s ongoing commitment to the multi-camera comedy genre, Lee announced that Kings of Van Nuys would be re-piloted.

The network is now moving forward with plans to shoot a new pilot after securing virtually the entire team from the original, including the entire cast and director Ted Wass.

The ABC Studios-produced Kings of Van Nuys chronicles the misadventures of two streetwise brothers, Del (Leguizamo) and Rodney (Dustin Ybarra), and their aging grandfather (Christopher Lloyd) as they concoct outrageous, morally questionable get-rich-quick schemes in their quest to become millionaires.

It’s official… Marc Cherry’s Devious Maids pilot, starring Roselyn Sanchez, will be heading to series at Lifetime.

The cable network has delivered a 13-episode order for the ABC Studios-produced project, which was originally developed for ABC but didn’t get picked to go to series.

Devious Maids

“This show and Marc Cherry’s unique story telling voice perfectly articulate Lifetime’s strategy of attracting top-tier creatives with their most original and exciting projects,” said Lifetime’s president Nancy Dubuc and EVP Rob Sharenow in a joint statement.

Based on the hit Mexican telenovela Ellas son la Alegría del Hogar, Devious Maids follows the lives of a group of ambitious maids who work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills while attempting to make their own dreams reality.

Along with Sanchez, Devious Maids stars Ana Ortiz, Judy Reyes, Dania Ramirez and Susan Lucci.
