Pablo Trapero

The film about Argentina’s notorious Puccio crime family is produced by Spain’s Agustín Almodóvar and Pedro Almodóvar and their El Deseo production company.

It’s already a box office hit at home as El Clan, beating the record set by Argentina’s last Academy Award-winning film, 2009’s The Secret In Their Eyes.

And it played well in its North American premiere in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Platform sidebar earlier this month.

Days after Trapero’s Venice win, he was signed by CAA; Trapero has had two films nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Oscars, Lion’s Den and Carancho.

The film was released by 20th Century Fox with Fox International Pictures in Latin America, and Fox will release it in the U.S.

Fox to Begin Rolling Out Banderas’ “The 33” in Latin American in August

In addition to Banderas, the survival drama also stars Gabriel Byrne, Rodrigo Santoro and Juliette Binoche.

Fox will roll out the film, which was directed by Mexico’s Patricia Riggen, across Latin America starting August 6 in Chile, after a red-carpet premiere on August 2. The premiere is expected to lure a constellation of local talent and officials, the miners as well as the film’s multinational cast and crew.

Alcon Entertainment, which snapped up the film’s distribution rights in North America and most other territories in the world, will release it through Warner Bros. in the U.S. on November 13.

The drama is based on the real events of the 2010 Chilean mining disaster in which 33 miners were trapped underground for months. A multinational effort to rescue the miners gripped a global TV audience for weeks.

Trailer views in Chile alone have numbered 6.6 million, according to 20th Century Fox Chile managing director Hernan Viviano. This is quite a significant tally given Chile’s population of 17 million, he says.

The film debuts August 20 in Colombia, along with the rest of Central America. The rollout continues across the region until October 29 in Brazil.

While most of the cave interior scenes were shot in Colombia, exterior scenes were filmed outside the actual Copiapo mine that fell in.

The licensing agreement with CBS Studios International follows Shomi grabbing the first window rights to another CW show, Rob ThomasiZombie, as part of a deal with Warner Bros.

“Once our exclusive period is up, the studio is free to license these titles for linear broadcast exhibitions on a second window, but no Canadian broadcaster will have these titles before us, or during our exclusive window,” Marni Shulman, head of content and programming at Shomi, told The Hollywood Reporter about the CBS distribution deal.

The Canadian streamer, a joint venture between Rogers Media and Shaw Media, launched last week as Canadian broadcasters compete against streaming goliath Netflix Canada. Shomi earlier agreed to a deal with Sony Pictures Television to acquire the exclusive streaming rights to The Blacklist, which landed on Netflix stateside as a first window.

Shomi is also streaming repeats of U.S. TV hit shows like 2 Broke Girls, Two and a Half Men, DaVinci’s Demons and Black Sails. It also has content deals signed with Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Starz Digital Media and BBC Worldwide North America.

It’s the latest international deal for Rodriguez’s critically acclaimed series.

Last month, CBS Studios International and U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 sealed the deal on a licensing agreement for the exclusive first window, free-to-air broadcast rights to new critically acclaimed comedy Jane the Virgin.
