There’s a silver lining in Queralt Castellet’s Olympics experience…
The 32-year-old Spanish snowboarder claimed the silver medal in the Women’s Halfpipe at the 2022 Beijing Games with a a sensational second run.
Castellet, competing in her fifth Winter Olympics, earned a 90.25 score for that run, coming in behind Team USA’s Chloe Kim. Kim, who repeated as a gold medalist in the event, scored 94 points on her first run.
Castellet had previously finished 11th in 2014 Sochi Games and seventh at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.
“All the emotions just exploded at the end,” she told Olympics.com in Beijing.
“And today was amazing even though I didn’t start on the right foot, on the second run everything came out, the nerves, the pressure, my thoughts of how important this is and somehow the strength came as well.
“Somehow I managed to put it all together in the second run and make it happen.”
Fourth in qualifying the day before the final, Castellet seized the day and this is the peak of a lifetime’s work.
“I have been working on it so much and just enjoy and make my riding happen and that’s what it was and I couldn’t be happier.
“I did a run that I wanted to do and it just worked out with second place which is still amazing after Chloe, she’s an incredible rider, an incredible athlete.”
With her silver performance, Castellet claimed only the second-ever women’s Winter Olympic medal for Spain, and the first-ever silver for her country.
