The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

Mariah Carey Returns to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 with “All I Want for Christmas Is You”

It’s December… And (no surprise) Mariah Carey‘ is back atop the Billboard charts.

The 55-year-old half-Venezuelan American Grammy-winning singer’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” dashes through all competition on the Billboard Hot 100 once again, surging nine spots to No. 1 for a 15th total week at the summit on the chart.

Mariah CareyThe carol reigns in a record-extending sixth holiday season.

It was originally released on Carey’s album Merry Christmas in November 1994 and, as streaming has grown and holiday music has become more prominent on streaming services’ playlists, it hit the Hot 100’s top 10 for the first time in December 2017, and the top five for the first time in the 2018 holiday season.

It led at last, prior to this week, over the holidays in 2019 (for three weeks), 2020 (two), 2021 (three), 2022 (four) and 2023 (two).

“When I wrote [it], I had absolutely no idea the impact the song would eventually have worldwide,” Carey marveled in 2021. “I’m so full of gratitude that so many people enjoy it with me every year.”

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” became Carey’s 19th Hot 100 No. 1, the most among soloists and one away from The Beatles’ overall record 20. It also made Carey the first artist to have ranked at No. 1 on the chart in four distinct decades (1990s, 2000s, ‘10s and ‘20s).

Carey’s insta-classic drew 38.2 million streams (up 42%) and 24.4 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 56%) and sold 3,000 downloads (up 81%) in the U.S. Nov. 29-Dec. 5, according to Luminate.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” ties for the sixth-longest command among the 1,176 total No. 1s dating to the Hot 100’s Aug. 4, 1958. start. (All seven songs have led since the list adopted electronically-monitored Luminate data in November 1991, at which point longer commands than before subsequently became more common.)

Below is a recap of the seven longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1s – with Carey the only artist with two entries on the elite list:

19 weeks, “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Shaboozey, 2024
19, “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, 2019
16, “Last Night,” Morgan Wallen, 2023
16, “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber, 2017
16, “One Sweet Day,” Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1995-96
15, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Mariah Carey, 2019-24
15, “As It Was,” Harry Styles, 2022

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations.

Outsider Pictures Acquires U.S. Theatrical Rights to Miguel Angel Ferrer’s “The Shadow of the Sun”

Miguel Angel Ferrer’s Oscar-hopeful will be hitting U.S. theaters.

Paul Hudson’s Outsider Pictures has acquired the U.S. theatrical rights to Venezuela’s 2024 International Feature Academy Award submission The Shadow of the Sun by the Venezuelan director.

Miguel Angel Ferrer,The Shadow of the Sun is the story of Alex, a young deaf man who asks his older brother Leo to accompany him in a musical competition. With the help of his brother’s voice, Alex has the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream, one that will push his skills to their limit and test his resilience in a culture not interested in inclusion.

“Part of the reason I made this movie, and what I know it’s successfully achieved from all the reactions that we’ve gotten, is for Venezuelans to see their invincible spirit on the screen,” said Ferrer. “The story has already been accepted by all Venezuelans who have seen it, regardless of political inclination, societal status, sexual orientation, religion, etc.”

The Shadow of the SunAlthough the film’s main narrative is an intimate tale, Ferrer says the film also explores larger themes relevant to all Venezuelans.

“The movie is not political on the surface, but underneath the story, there’s an undercurrent of economic struggles, gangs, and all the trials and tribulations that every single Venezuelan knows like the back of their hand.”

“Despite everything, the characters persist and make it to the finish line. Win or not, that’s the story of every Venezuelan and most Latinos in the world. All of our countries are plagued by similar corruption and hardships, and yet we’re some of the happiest and most resilient people,” he added.

Produced by Martiza Carbajal and Alvar Carretero’s De la Reina LLC, The Shadow of the Sun enjoyed a fruitful festival run, winning the audience award at the Miami Film Festival, best Latin American feature at Monterrey, a special jury prize at the Seattle Latino Film Festival and five prizes at the Festival del Cine Venezolano.

“It’s an enjoyable challenge to bring a film like Shadow of the Sun to the U.S. to not only find and cater to the growing Venezuelan market but also try and bring the Latino and arthouse audiences along for the ride,” Outsider founder and CEO Hudson told Variety of his company’s latest pickup.

Outsider Pictures is planning a U.S. theatrical run in the spring of 2025, targeting the country’s growing Venezuelan population. According to Hudson, Outsider is committed to finding films for the group.

Willy Adames Agrees to 7-Year, $182 Million Contract with San Francisco Giants

Willy Adames has $182 million reasons to smile…

The 29-year-old Dominican professional baseball shortstop has agreed to a seven-year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants, the largest outlay in franchise history, per ESPN.

Willy Adames,Adames was the Giants’ top target this winter.

With the best free agent on the market, Juan Soto, likely to choose his team in the next 48 hours, San Francisco struck a deal with Adames, who was also being considered by teams in the running for Soto.

Adames has been a consistent presence in the middle of the Milwaukee Brewers‘ lineup for the past four seasons after arriving in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays.

Adames’ 30-homer power is rare for a shortstop and the Giants have struggled to find a replacement for Brandon Crawford, who manned the position for 13 seasons.

The deal, which is pending a physical, breaks the franchise-record $167 million given to catcher Buster Posey, who is in his first year as the Giants’ president of baseball operations. It will include a $22 million signing bonus, according to sources.

Adames had career highs in home runs (32), RBIs (112) and stolen bases (21) in 2024 while finishing fifth in FanGraphs wins above replacement among shortstops. Adames also tied the major league record for most three-run home runs in a single season with 13, helping the Brewers to the National League Central title.

Other teams were considering using Adames as a third baseman, but the Giants will hope his glove continues to match his offensive output. Over his seven-year career, Adames has slashed .248/.322/.444 with 150 home runs, 472 RBIs and 51 stolen bases.
