Guillermo del Toro could end up with a monster hit series on HBO…
The 48-year-old Mexican American filmmaker has sealed a deal to adapt the Japanese Manga series entitled Monster for the premium cable network.
del Toroisculling the potential HBO show from a series of 18 award-winning volumes by author Naoki Urasawa, which were published by Shogakukan Inc.
del Toro will co-write the story with Steven Thompson, best known for his work onDr. Who and Sherlock.
Monster begins with a brilliant young doctor whose choice to save a dying 12-year-old boy unwittingly unleashes a Pandora’s Box that leaves him battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.
The young adult series first began in 1995 in Japan, but it took about a decade to be translated for distribution in the U.S.
Thompson will write the pilot, which del Toro plans to direct.
