Cannavale Earns Drama Desk Award Nomination for “The Hairy Ape”

Bobby Cannavale could be going bananas soon…

The 46-year-old half-Cuban American actor has picked up a Drama Desk Award nomination for his role in Park Avenue Armory’s production of The Hairy Ape.

Bobby Cannavale

Cannavale is nominated in the Outstanding Actor in a Play category for his performance in the nontraditional off-Broadway staging of Eugene O’Neill’s Expressionist classic.

Cannavale, a two-time Emmy award winner, previously won a Drama Desk for Outstanding Actor in a Play in 2011 for The Motherf**ker With the Hat, a prize he shared with Raquel Welch.

But Cannavale isn’t the only Latino nominee this year…

Nick Cordero picked up a nod in the Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his performance as Sonny in A Bronx Tale The Musical.

The 38-year-old half-Latino actor, who was born and raised in Canada, previously earned a Drama Desk nod, and Tony Award nomination, for his role as Cheech in the musical Bullets Over Broadway back in 2014.

Brian Quijada has earned two Drama Desk nominations for his Latino-themed project, Where Did We Sit on the Bus?, which examines what it means to be Latino through the eyes of a child, turned teenager, turned adult.

Written and performed by the Salvadoran American actor, the one-man show earned Quijada nods in the Outstanding Solo Performance and Outstanding Sound Design in a Play categories.

George Salazar is nominated in the Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical category.

The 31-year-old half-Ecuadorian American actor, singer, and musician earned the nod for his performance in The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.

The Drama Desk Awards are presented annually by The Drama Desk Organization and recognize excellence in New York theatre productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway.

Other Latino nominees include Jitney’s Ruben Santiago-Hudson for Outstanding Director of a Play, and Daniel Ocanto for Outstanding Music in a Play.

Winners will be announced June 4 at The Town Hall in Manhattan.
