Ismael Borrero has wrestled his way to gold…
The 24-year-old Cuban Greco-Roman wrestler took home the gold medal in the men’s Greco-Roman 59kg division on Sunday, beating Japan’s Shinobu Ota, at the 2016 Rio Games.
Borrero, the reigning world champion in the same division, was competing in his first Olympics.
Borrero added Olympic champion to his wrestling CV with an 8-0 technical fall over Ota at Carioca Arena 2.
Borrero converted a par terre chance in the first period with a lift and throw combination to a gut wrench for a 6-0 lead over Ota and added a drag to takedown in the second for an 8-0 technical fall at 4:53.
Earlier in the men’s 59kg semifinal round, Borrero took on Elmurat Tasmuradov of Uzbekistan, while Ota faced off against Rovshan Bayramov of Azerbaijan. It was Borrero and Shinobu who came out on top in those matches, sending Tasmuradov and Bayramov to the bronze medal matches.
