The 39-year-old part-Dominican American Grammy-winning singer has joined voices (and lips) with Joyner Lucas on the new track “Fall Slowly,” where she appears as his love interest in the song’s music video.
Despite Ashanti and Lucas’ undeniable chemistry, the video shows there’s trouble in paradise. Physical and verbal arguments in public, Lucas’ arrest and Ashanti’s unanticipated pregnancy test result are juxtaposed with late-night kisses and cuddles and naps on couches.
And Lucas raps about their tumultuous relationship in the first verse: “‘Cause when we hurt each other we come back to help each other heal/ You say I’m crazy, but at least you know my love is real/ But s–t, you crazy too, and that’s why they say love is hell.”
“Fall Slowly” comes ahead of the two-time Grammy-nominated rapper’s new EP EVOLUTION, which will arrive on Friday, September 18.
Ashanti previously appeared on DaBaby’s single “Nasty,” alongside Megan Thee Stallion.
