Jeidimar Rijosis a champion…
The 18-year-old Puerto Rican singer has emerged victorious alongside her coach, Puerto Rican superstar Luis Fonsi, in the inaugural season of Telemundo‘s La Voz.
“Bravo to Jeidimar,” Fonsi said with the trophy in his hands. “And to Puerto Rico, we’re taking this one home.”
It was a Puerto Rican win through and through, as Rijos performed “Preciosa,” the iconic Rafael Hernandezcomposition that is dedicated to the island and was most recently popularized by Marc Anthony.
The evening started with 16 finalists: four each from Fonsi and his fellow coaches, Mexican icon Alejandra Guzmán, Colombian singer-songwriter Carlos Vivesand Puerto Rican rapper Wisin.
By the end, the field was narrowed down to the final four contestants, who were the ones with the most votes from Teams Fonsi, Guzmán, Vives and Wisin. It was a girl power showdown with Guzmán’s Dunia Ojedafinishing in fourth place, Vives’ Mava Gonzalescoming in third, and Wisin’s Mayré Martinezas the runner-up.
Rijos, who tearfully won the competition, went home with a $100,000 cash prize, and a record contract with Universal Music Group.
In the two-and-a-half hours leading up to Rijos’ win, La Voz was a true celebration of Latin culture and music. Contestants hailed from different countries in Latin America and represented various styles of Latin music, and the show did its best to capture the versatility. As Wisin put it, the night was a “fiesta Latina.”
