It’s a big day for J Balvin…
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards nominations have been announced, with the Colombian superstar leading the Latino/a pack of nominees with four.
Balvin, who previously won MTV VMAs in 2018 for “Mi Gente” (Best Latin) and his collaboration with Cardi B and Bad Bunny “I Like It” (Song of the Summer), is nominated in the Best Collaboration category his Black Eyed Peas team-up “Ritmo (Bad Boys For Life).”
Balvin also earned three nods in the Best Latin category for “Amarillo,” as well as his collaborations “China” and “Que Pena,” featuring Maluma, who earns his fourth career VMAs nod.
Karol G, who leads the Latina nominees, picked up the first three MTV VMA nods of her career.
The 29-year-old Colombian singer is up for Best Collaboration and Best Latin for her chart-topping “Tusa,” featuring Nicki Minaj. She’s also nominated in the Best Latin category for appearing on Anuel AA’s “China” alongside Balvin, Daddy Yankee and Ozuna. It’s Anuel AA’s first-ever MTV VMA nod, and one-time MTV VMA winner Daddy Yankee’s eighth nod.
Ozuna, nominated last year for Best Dance for his appearance on DJ Snake’s “Taki Taki,” has picked up two nominations.
In addition to a nod in the Best Latin category for “China,” he’s also nominated in the same category for his collaboration with the Black Eyed Peas and J. Rey Soul on “Mamacita.”
Bad Bunny picked up one nod, in the Best Latin category, for his “Yo Perreo Sola” music video.
Demi Lovato is nominated in the Video for Good category.
The 27-year-old half-Mexican American singer/actress, a 10-time nominee, earned the nod for her self-empowerment single “I Love Me.”
CNCO, last year’s Push Artist of the Year nominee, picked up one nomination.
The Latin boy band is up for Best Quarantine Performance for their virtual Unplugged at Home concert.
In light of the coronavirus pandemic that’s kept everyone at home to slow the spread of COVID-19, MTV added the Best Music Video From Home and Best Quarantine Performance categories to this year’s awards.
ViacomCBS Media Networks‘ president of music, music talent, programming and events Bruce Gillmer said in a statement that fans can expect “a show that celebrates the powerful unifying force of music.”
The 2020 VMAs will take place in New York City, with performances from iconic locations across the five boroughs, designed “to honor the spirit and resilience” of the city hit particularly hard by the pandemic this spring.
Elements of the ceremony taking place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, meanwhile, will have “limited or no audience” participation, according to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Still, the VMAs will be the first event to take place at the Brooklyn arena since the pandemic forced the closure of live-entertainment venues, and cancellation of concerts and other events, including professional sports, in New York.
After a particularly rough experience with the pandemic, with as many as 11,000 new cases a day in April, New York has seen the number of daily new coronavirus cases decline since then and stay below 1,000 a day for the past month.
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 30 at 8:00 pm ET/PT.
