Amanda Nunesis celebrating her right to bare arms… and more.
The 31-year-old Brazilian mixed martial artist andUltimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star is one of the featured athletes in this year’s edition of ESPN The Magazine’s The Body Issue, in which the world’s top athletes shed their clothes and pose for photographs that help celebrate the athletic form.
Nunes, the reigning UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion, was selected to be one of the cover stars for the ninth-annual edition, which will also be ESPN The Magazine’s last print version of The Body Issue.
“Everything that I wanted to do, I did it. Now I enjoy this moment because I work hard for these moments,” says Nunes of her successful MMA career. “Now I really can look in the mirror and say, ‘We did it. I did it.’”
In July, she was named “Female Fighter of the Year” at the World MMA Awards. That same month, she defeated ex-champ Holly Holm for the135-pound title. Nunes will now return to bantamweight for a rematch against Germaine de Randamie, a championship title fight that co-headlines the UFC 245 event in December.
Nunes joins a long roster of Latino athletes to be featured in The Body Issue, including baseball stars Jake Arrieta and Giancarlo Stanton, footballers Omar Gonzalez and Carlos Bocanegra, Olympic boxer Marlen Esparza and Olympic gymnast Danell Leyva.
The magazine hits newsstands this Friday, September 6, ESPN The Magazine released a digital edition two days earlier.
